While it may not be as enjoyable to drive as the Porsche Cayenne, nor is it as effortlessly smooth as the Genesis GV80, the 2024 BMW X5 combines elements from both to create a pleasing—and pleasantly luxurious—middle ground. It’s evident from the start that the X5 aims for broad appeal. Why else would BMW offer it with three different powertrain options, including a smooth inline-six, a commanding twin-turbo V-8, and an environmentally friendly plug-in hybrid?

The SUV’s interior is adorned with high-quality materials and, like other BMWs, boasts cleverly integrated technological features such as a sleek curved digital display that spans almost the entire length of the dashboard. This approach results in a luxury SUV that is so well-rounded that its few shortcomings are easily overlooked, solidifying the X5’s position as one of our favorite mid-size crossovers.

The exterior design of the BMW X5 2024 is a perfect blend of elegance and sportiness. The iconic kidney grille has been slightly reimagined, giving it a more aggressive and dynamic look. The sleek LED headlights seamlessly integrate with the grille, further enhancing the overall aesthetics. The body lines are sculpted to perfection, creating a sense of power and sophistication. Additionally, the 2024 model offers a variety of vibrant color options to suit individual preferences.

BMW has made several exterior enhancements to the X5 for the 2024 model year. These include a redesigned front grille and bumper, updated headlamps and taillamps, and fresh wheel designs. The high-end M60i variant features gloss-black exterior accents, quad tailpipes, and an M logo on the grille. Both the 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine now come with a new 48-volt hybrid system. Additionally, the six-cylinder engine has been tweaked to increase its output to 375 horsepower. Despite changing its name from M50i to M60i, the performance-focused model maintains the same horsepower rating of 523.

The previous xDrive45e plug-in hybrid version has been replaced by a more powerful xDrive50e, which offers an additional 94 horsepower and 10 more miles of electric-only driving range, resulting in a total output of 483 horsepower and 40 miles of EV driving range. All X5 models now feature a curved infotainment display and BMW’s latest iDrive 8 software interface. An update to iDrive 8.5 is already planned for the summer of 2023. Furthermore, the X5 is now equipped with the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature, which was first introduced in BMW’s flagship luxury sedan, the 7-series.

Interior Comfort and Technology of BMW X5 2024

Step inside the BMW X5 2024, and you’ll be greeted with a cabin that exudes luxury and comfort. The use of premium materials like leather upholstery, wood accents, and brushed aluminum trims elevate the overall ambiance. The seats are ergonomically designed and offer exceptional support, even during long drives.

In terms of technology, the X5 2024 is packed with cutting-edge features. The centerpiece is the iDrive infotainment system with a large touchscreen display that provides intuitive access to navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless smartphone integration. Additionally, the X5 2024 boasts an impressive sound system that delivers immersive audio quality.

Interior space is generous for adults in both the first and second rows, but the X5’s optional third row is only suitable for children. Once inside, occupants are treated to a cabin adorned with high-quality materials, numerous charging points for devices, and a variety of luxury features depending on the chosen options. Standard features include power-adjustable front seats with driver memory, a power-adjustable steering column, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and customizable ambient lighting. To enhance the X5’s luxurious feel, one can opt for additional features such as massaging seats, remote start, soft-close doors, acoustic glass, a leather dashboard, and heated front armrests and steering wheel, although these additions significantly increase the overall cost.

For those seeking an exceptional audio experience, there is also the option to add a Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system with diamond-domed tweeters. In terms of cargo space, the X5 offers ample room. With the rear seats in use, we were able to fit 11 carry-on suitcases behind the second row of seats. When the rear seats are folded, which can be done from either the side or rear of the SUV, the X5 provides room for 26 cases. The GLE-class achieved the same result in this test, matching the X5 case for case, although its rear seats are not as easy to stow.

Performance and Handling of BMW X5 2024

BMW X3 Review: Unveiling the Ultimate Driving Machine of 2024

The BMW X5 2024 offers a range of powerful engine options to suit different driving preferences. The base model comes equipped with a turbocharged inline-six engine that produces ample power for everyday driving needs. For those seeking more performance, there’s an available V8 engine variant that delivers exhilarating acceleration.

The handling of the X5 2024 is nothing short of exceptional. The standard adaptive suspension system ensures a smooth and comfortable ride, even on rough terrain. Additionally, BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system provides enhanced stability and traction in various driving conditions.

The 2024 X5 is available with three different powertrains, each associated with a specific model. X5s with the sDrive40i or xDrive40i badges are equipped with a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six engine. In our previous test of an xDrive40i, it produced only 335 horsepower, yet managed to achieve a quick 4.8-second acceleration to 60 mph. Therefore, we anticipate even better performance from the more powerful version. The plug-in hybrid xDrive50e features a turbocharged inline-six engine and an electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 483 horsepower. Lastly, the M60i boasts a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine, allowing it to reach 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

All three powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and provide ample power for any driving situation. The X5’s smooth ride and stable handling are characteristic of this generation of BMW SUVs, as is its responsive and direct steering. While the Audi Q7 still outperforms the X5 in this aspect, the difference is minimal. When navigating through fast corners, the X5 maintains its grip consistently and rewards the driver with a level of predictability that the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class lacks.

Safety Features of BMW X5 2024

BMW has always prioritized safety, and the X5 2024 is no exception. This model comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced safety features to keep occupants protected on the road. Some notable safety technologies include:

  • Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality
  • Parking sensors and surround-view camera system

Unleashing the Power of the 2024 Maverick X3: A Comprehensive Review

The BMW X5 2024 offers ample interior space that can comfortably accommodate five passengers. The rear seats can be folded down to create additional cargo space when needed. With the seats up, the X5 provides generous cargo capacity for luggage or groceries. The hands-free power liftgate makes accessing the rear cargo area effortless.

Fuel Efficiency of BMW X5 2024

Despite its powerful performance capabilities, the BMW X5 2024 manages to deliver respectable fuel efficiency. The combination of efficient engine options and advanced technologies like auto start-stop helps optimize fuel consumption. This makes the X5 a versatile choice for both daily commuting and long-distance trips.

The EPA has not yet released fuel economy estimates for the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e. However, both the rear-wheel drive sDrive40i and the all-wheel drive xDrive40i have been rated at 23 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The V-8 powered M60i model is expected to achieve 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Once we have the opportunity, we will conduct a fuel economy test on the 2024 X5 using our 75-mph highway route and update this article with the results.

Driving Modes and Customization of BMW X5 2024

One of the standout features of the BMW X5 2024 is its range of driving modes that allow drivers to tailor their driving experience to their preferences. Whether you prefer a more relaxed ride or a sportier feel, the X5 has you covered. The available driving modes include Comfort, Sport, Eco Pro, and Adaptive.

The 2024 BMW X5 has a starting price of $66,195 and goes up to $90,295. The base trim level, sDrive40i, is rear-wheel drive, while the xDrive40i, xDrive50e, and xDrive M60i models all come with all-wheel drive as standard. We value both performance and saving money, which is why we believe the xDrive40i is the best option to purchase. It offers sports-sedan acceleration, comes with all-wheel drive, and is relatively affordable in this expensive class. We suggest adding the Premium package for its head-up display, LED exterior lighting, remote engine-start capability, and Harman/Kardon stereo system.
